Happy Cosmonautics Day! Happy Gagarin Day! Happy Astronautics Day!

When I orbited the Earth in a spaceship, I saw for the first time how beautiful our planet is. Mankind, let us preserve and increase this beauty, and not destroy it!
Yuri Gagarin

The rocket will free man from his remaining chains, the chains of gravity which still tie him to this planet. It will open to him the gates of heaven.
Wernher von Braun

I am just learning to notice the different colors of the stars, and already begin to have a new enjoyment.
Maria Mitchell

When you’re finally up at the moon looking back on earth, all those differences and nationalistic traits are pretty well going to blend, and you’re going to get a concept that maybe this really is one world and why the hell can’t we learn to live together like decent people.
Frank Borman

A sense of the unknown has always lured mankind and the greatest of the unknowns of today is outer space. The terrors, the joys and the sense of accomplishment are epitomized in the space program.
William Shatner

Astronomy compels the soul to look upward, and leads us from this world to another.
Plato

I don’t think the human race will survive the next thousand years, unless we spread into space. There are too many accidents that can befall life on a single planet. But I’m an optimist. We will reach out to the stars.
Stephen Hawking

If you could see the earth illuminated when you were in a place as dark as night, it would look to you more splendid than the moon.
Galileo Galilei

Let’s face it, space is a risky business. I always considered every launch a barely controlled explosion.
Aaron Cohen

Oddly enough the overriding sensation I got looking at the earth was, my god that little thing is so fragile out there.
Mike Collins

The Earth may be the cradle of humanity, but no child remains in its cradle forever.
Konstantin E. Tsiolkovsky

I’m coming back in… and it’s the saddest moment of my life.
Ed White

I didn’t feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.
Neil Armstrong

I feel fine. How about you?
Yuri Gagarin

When I first looked back at the Earth, standing on the Moon, I cried.
Alan Shepard

There is perhaps no better a demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world.
Carl Sagan

The scenery was very beautiful. But I did not see The Great Wall of China.
Yang Liwei

From out there on the Moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch.’
Edgar Mitchel

We have your satellite. If you want it back send 20 billion in Martian money. No funny business or you will never see it again.

Contact light.

Anyone who sits on top of the largest hydrogen-oxygen fueled system in the world, knowing they’re going to light the bottom, and doesn’t get a little worried, does not fully understand the situation.
John Young

Almost everything worthwhile carries with it some sort of risk, whether it's starting a new business, whether it's leaving home, whether it's getting married, or whether it's flying in space.
Chris Hadfield

Ultimately, leadership is not about glorious crowning acts. It's about keeping your team focused on a goal and motivated to do their best to achieve it, especially when the stakes are high and the consequences really matter. It is about laying the groundwork for others' success, and then standing back and letting them shine.
Chris Hadfield

The International Space Station is a phenomenal laboratory, an unparalleled test bed for new invention and discovery. Yet I often thought, while silently gazing out the window at Earth, that the actual legacy of humanity's attempts to step into space will be a better understanding of our current planet and how to take care of it.
Chris Hadfield

Some of the greatest reality television we ever had was the moon landings. When you think about it, that was human emotion and people, unscripted, working with each other - and millions and millions of people around the world, glued to their television sets to share real-time in a brand new, fascinating human experience.
Chris Hadfield

In the astronaut business - the shuttle is a very complicated vehicle; it's the most complicated flying machine ever built. And in the astronaut business, we have a saying, which is, 'There is no problem so bad that you can't make it worse.'
Chris Hadfield

The world, when you look at it, it just can't be random. I mean, it's so different than the vast emptiness that is everything else, and even all the other planets we've seen, at least in our solar system, none of them even remotely resemble the precious life-giving nature of our own planet.
Chris Hadfield

My father was an airline pilot, so we travelled more spontaneously than a lot of families. On a Thursday, we could decide to go somewhere like Barbados the next day for a long weekend.
Chris Hadfield

Just taking risks for risk's sake, that doesn't do it for me. I'm willing to take risks that I think are worth it, and I've worked so hard to make sure that I survive.
Chris Hadfield

A lot of people live in fear because they haven't figured out how you're going to react when faced with a certain set of circumstances. I've come to terms with this by looking deeply into whatever makes me fearful - what are the key elements that get the hairs up on the back of my neck - and then figuring out what I can do about it.
Chris Hadfield

Alexander Gerst

My future is certainly in space. I've given up my old job, which - to quote my former colleagues - was the second best job in the world. You can't do science part-time.
Alexander Gerst

Really, in this universe we know of no other place where we can live. It seems grotesque, seen from up there that people fight wars or pollute the environment or burn down forests.
Alexander Gerst

I don't want to be a moral apostle and to say we should do this and that. I want to get across a perspective - for people to see how it looks from outside.
Alexander Gerst

I came to think, 'If extraterrestrial beings really did come to visit us, how would we explain to them what they see?' That we burn down trees that we need to survive, that we fight wars with each other. That's something that I find hard to explain.
Alexander Gerst

The grass is always greener on the other side. At the moment, I have to say I'm really happy to be back here…but certainly the time will come when I will want to go out there again.
Alexander Gerst
