Happy Birthday Arthur Doyle!

For strange effects and extraordinary combinations we must go to life itself, which is always far more daring than any effort of the imagination.

London, that great cesspool into which all the loungers and idlers of the Empire are irresistibly drained.

His ignorance was as remarkable as his knowledge.

We can't command our love, but we can our actions.

Violence does, in truth, recoil upon the violent, and the schemer falls into the pit which he digs for another.

I never guess. It is a shocking habit destructive to the logical faculty.

From a drop of water a logician could infer the possibility of an Atlantic or a Niagara without having seen or heard of one or the other.

It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data.

Sir Walter, with his 61 years of life, although he never wrote a novel until he was over 40, had, fortunately for the world, a longer working career than most of his brethren.

The lowest and vilest alleys of London do not present a more dreadful record of sin than does the smiling and beautiful countryside.

There is nothing more unaesthetic than a policeman.

Some facts should be suppressed, or, at least, a just sense of proportion should be observed in treating them.

To the man who loves art for its own sake, it is frequently in its least important and lowliest manifestations that the keenest pleasure is to be derived.

Women are naturally secretive, and they like to do their own secreting.

Circumstantial evidence is occasionally very convincing, as when you find a trout in the milk, to quote Thoreau's example.

It has long been an axiom of mine that the little things are infinitely the most important.

A man should keep his little brain attic stocked with all the furniture that he is likely to use, and the rest he can put away in the lumber-room of his library, where he can get it if he wants it.

Mediocrity knows nothing higher than itself, but talent instantly recognizes genius.

As Cuvier could correctly describe a whole animal by the contemplation of a single bone, so the observer who has thoroughly understood one link in a series of incidents should be able to accurately state all the other ones, both before and after.

When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.

Of all ghosts the ghosts of our old loves are the worst.

Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.

The ideal reasoner, he remarked, would, when he had once been shown a single fact in all its bearings, deduce from it not only all the chain of events which led up to it but also all the results which would follow from it.

Where there is no imagination there is no horror.

The most difficult crime to track is the one which is purposeless.

I consider that a man's brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose.

How often have I said to you that when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth?

My mind rebels at stagnation. Give me problems, give me work, give me the most abstruse cryptogram, or the most intricate analysis, and I am in my own proper atmosphere. But I abhor the dull routine of existence. I crave for mental exaltation.

I have seen too much not to know that the impression of a woman may be more valuable than the conclusion of an analytical reasoner.

There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact.

When a doctor does go wrong he is the first of criminals. He has nerve and he has knowledge.

You will, I am sure, agree with me that... if page 534 only finds us in the second chapter, the length of the first one must have been really intolerable.

Nothing clears up a case so much as stating it to another person.

A trusty comrade is always of use; and a chronicler still more so.

A client is to me a mere unit, a factor in a problem.

Any truth is better than indefinite doubt.

It is an old maxim of mine that when you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.

As a rule, said Holmes, the more bizarre a thing is the less mysterious it proves to be. It is your commonplace, featureless crimes which are really puzzling, just as a commonplace face is the most difficult to identify.

Depend upon it there comes a time when for every addition of knowledge you forget something that you knew before. It is of the highest importance, therefore, not to have useless facts elbowing out the useful ones.

I have frequently gained my first real insight into the character of parents by studying their children.

Our ideas must be as broad as Nature if they are to interpret Nature.

Happy Birthday Georgie Fame!

Suckle was the first West Indian DJ and he had this fantastic source of music.

We were at Pye Studios for half an hour so we set the gear up and we did two tracks. A month later we found out it was selling thirty thousand copies a day.

The BBC were not playing the music that was happening on the street so we did an independent production because we knew we had an audience. Then we licensed the album to EMI.

Some people think I'm a rock 'n' roll musician and some think I'm a jazz musician but, for me, there is no difference.

My generation had the best years. We missed the Second World War and caught the outburst of rock 'n' roll.

In my youth I thought I was going to be a professional rugby player.

I avoid the media circus, keep my head down and try to keep growing and learning things.

I broke up the band in the office in Gerrard Street.

If you had a good radio - and everybody did in those days - you could find it.

Happy Birthday Walter Farley!

Beautiful head. The head was that of the wildest of all wild creatures—a stallion born wild—and it was beautiful, savage, splendid. A stallion with a wonderful physical perfection that matched his savage, ruthless spirit.

The Black was looking out on the open sea; his ears pricked forward, his thin-skinned nostrils quivering, his black mane flowing like windswept flame. Alec could not turn his eyes away; he could not believe such a perfect creature existed.

Yet when books have been read and reread, it boils down to the horse, his human companion, and what goes on between them.

His mane was like a crest, mounting, then falling low. His neck was long and slender, and arched to the small, savagely beautiful head. The head was that of the wildest of all wild creatures- a stallion born wild- and it was beautiful, savage, splendid. A stallion with a wonderful physical perfection that matched his savage, ruthless spirit.

You need luck to keep going. It takes more than skill to stay alive.

I believe that half the trouble in the world comes from people asking 'What have I achieved?' rather than 'What have I enjoyed?' I've been writing about a subject I love as long as I can remember--horses and the people associated with them, anyplace, anywhere, anytime. I couldn't be happier knowing that young people are reading my books. But even more important to me is that I've enjoyed so much the writing of them.

Dedicated to all boys and girls who love horses but never have had one of their own.

You've never in your life seen a horse run so fast! He's all power-all beauty.

On his office wall he had a note to himself: 'Money is necessary--but it isn't too important.' Money meant for him to keep on writing and to go his own way.

Happy Birthday Stefan Andres!

Happy Birthday Sidney Howard!

Questions of absolute good and evil are much better not opened to public debate these days, when so few people are sure of their absolutes.

He’s a pagan! I’m an artist! We’re naturally sympathetic!

Don't drink alone, Scarlett. People always find out and it ruins your reputation.

One half of knowing what you want is knowing what you must give up before you get it.

Gone with the wind.

Truth has to be credible or it makes as much trouble as any lie!

Happy Birthday Pearl S. Buck!

To serve is beautiful, but only if it is done with joy and a whole heart and a free mind.

The basic discovery about any people is the discovery of the relationship between men and women.

The young do not know enough to be prudent, and therefore they attempt the impossible - and achieve it, generation after generation.

When good people in any country cease their vigilance and struggle, then evil men prevail.

Truth is always exciting. Speak it, then; life is dull without it.

Chinese are wise in comprehending without many words what is inevitable and inescapable and therefore only to be borne.

All things are possible until they are proved impossible - and even the impossible may only be so, as of now.

I feel no need for any other faith than my faith in the kindness of human beings. I am so absorbed in the wonder of earth and the life upon it that I cannot think of heaven and angels.

What is a neglected child? He is a child not planned for, not wanted. Neglect begins, therefore, before he is born.

Hunger makes a thief of any man.

To eat bread without hope is still slowly to starve to death.

Love alone could waken love.

The bitterest creature under heaven is the wife who discovers that her husband's bravery is only bravado, that his strength is only a uniform, that his power is but a gun in the hands of a fool.

You cannot make yourself feel something you do not feel, but you can make yourself do right in spite of your feelings.

In a mood of faith and hope my work goes on. A ream of fresh paper lies on my desk waiting for the next book. I am a writer and I take up my pen to write.

Praise out of season, or tactlessly bestowed, can freeze the heart as much as blame.

It may be that religion is dead, and if it is, we had better know it and set ourselves to try to discover other sources of moral strength before it is too late.

A good marriage is one which allows for change and growth in the individuals and in the way they express their love.

Nothing and no one can destroy the Chinese people. They are relentless survivors.

To find joy in work is to discover the fountain of youth.

A man is educated and turned out to work. But a woman is educated and turned out to grass.

Every great mistake has a halfway moment, a split second when it can be recalled and perhaps remedied.

I am mentally bifocal.

Love dies only when growth stops.

We send missionaries to China so the Chinese can get to heaven, but we won't let them into our country.

Self-expression must pass into communication for its fulfillment.

When men destroy their old gods they will find new ones to take their place.

Our society must make it right and possible for old people not to fear the young or be deserted by them, for the test of a civilization is the way that it cares for its helpless members.

Like Confucius of old, I am so absorbed in the wonder of the earth and the life upon it, that I cannot think of heaven and the angels.

A dog barks when his master is attacked. I would be a coward if I saw that God's truth is attacked and yet would remain silent.

Men and women should own the world as a mutual possession.

Growth itself contains the germ of happiness.

Men would rather be starving and free than fed in bonds.

If our American way of life fails the child, it fails us all.

Order is the shape upon which beauty depends.

Some are kissing mothers and some are scolding mothers, but it is love just the same, and most mothers kiss and scold together.

We should so provide for old age that it may have no urgent wants of this world to absorb it from meditation on the next. It is awful to see the lean hands of dotage making a coffer of the grave.

Race prejudice is not only a shadow over the colored it is a shadow over all of us, and the shadow is darkest over those who feel it least and allow its evil effects to go on.

Inside myself is a place where I live all alone and that is where I renew my springs that never dry up.

Life without idealism is empty indeed. We just hope or starve to death.

The secret of joy in work is contained in one word - excellence. To know how to do something well is to enjoy it.

If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday.

I don't wait for moods. You accomplish nothing if you do that. Your mind must know it has got to get down to work.

The truth is always exciting. Speak it, then. Life is dull without it.

One faces the future with one's past.

You can judge your age by the amount of pain you feel when you come in contact with a new idea.

Nothing in life is as good as the marriage of true minds between man and woman. As good? It is life itself.

None who have always been free can understand the terrible fascinating power of the hope of freedom to those who are not free.

Let woman out of the home, let man into it, should be the aim of education. The home needs man, and the world outside needs woman.

The person who tries to live alone will not succeed as a human being. His heart withers if it does not answer another heart. His mind shrinks away if he hears only the echoes of his own thoughts and finds no other inspiration.

Happy Birthday Ricky Gervais!

Beliefs do not change facts. Facts, if one is rational, should change beliefs.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth . . . Then he said, "Let there be light." Which means he made the entire universe in the dark! How fucking good is that? He's brilliant.

I am not a wolf in sheep's clothing, I'm a wolf in wolf's clothing.

Science seeks the truth. And it does not discriminate. For better or worse it finds things out. Science is humble. It knows what it knows and it knows what it doesn’t know. It bases its conclusions and beliefs on hard evidence -- evidence that is constantly updated and upgraded. It doesn’t get offended when new facts come along. It embraces the body of knowledge. It doesn’t hold on to medieval practices because they are tradition.

Honor is a gift a man gives himself. You can be as good as anyone that ever lived. If you can read, you can learn everything that anyone ever learned. But you've got to want it.

You do your own thing and you see if you survive.

The grass isn't always greener on the other side!

The best advice I've ever received is, 'No one else knows what they're doing either.

There's no difference between fame and infamy now. There's a new school of professional famous people that don't do anything. They don't create anything.

You could easily spot any Religion of Peace. Its extremist members would be extremely peaceful.

People confuse the subject of the joke with the target of the joke, and they're very rarely the same.

As an atheist, I see nothing “wrong” in believing in a God. I don’t think there is a God, but belief in him does no harm. If it helps you in any way, then that’s fine with me. It’s when belief starts infringing on other people’s rights when it worries me. I would never deny your right to believe in a God. I would just rather you didn’t kill people who believe in a different God, say. Or stone someone to death because your rulebook says their sexuality is immoral. It’s strange that anyone who believes that an all-powerful all-knowing, omniscient power responsible for everything that happens, would also want to judge and punish people for what they are.

Why buy a book when you can join a library.

Ignorance might be bliss for the ignorant, but for the rest of us it's a right fucking pain in the arse.

Look, just tell me where that lemon came from and I'll shut up and go away.

You won’t burn in hell. But be nice anyway.

Where there's a will - there's a relative!

Mondays are fine. It's your life that sucks.

Pol Pot - he rounded up anybody he thought was intellectual and had them executed. And how he told someone was intellectual or not was whether they wore glasses. If they're that clever, take them off when they see him coming!

Life is just a series of peaks and troughs. And you don't know whether you're in a trough until you're climbing out, or on a peak until you're coming down. And that's it you know, you never know what's round the corner. But it's all good. "If you want the rainbow, you've gotta put up with the rain." Do you know which "philosopher" said that? Dolly Parton. And people say she's just a big pair of tits.

We want to see a struggle. We want to see people falling over but getting themselves back up on their feet, and that's what's extraordinary- ordinary people and their struggle. There's nothing as interesting as real life out your window. You walk down the street for half an hour, I'll give you half an hour of drama.

A Christian telling an atheist they're going to hell is as scary as a child telling an adult they're not getting any presents from Santa.

Spirituality really lost its way when it became a stick to beat people with: ‘Do this or you’ll burn in hell.

That’s the other thing I learned that day, that the truth, however shocking or uncomfortable, in the end leads to liberation and dignity.

My greatest hero is Nelson Mandela. What a man. Incarcerated for 25 years, he was released in 1990 and he hasn't reoffended. I think he's going straight, which shows you prison does work.

Just because you're offended, doesn't mean you're right.

Remember, when you are dead, you do not know you are dead. It is only painful for others. The same applies when you are stupid.

You should make something. You should bring something into the world that wasn't in the world before. It doesn't matter what it is. It doesn't matter if it's a table or a film or gardening-everyone should create. You should do something, then sit back and say, 'I did that.'

No one wants to see cool people doing brilliantly. I want to see the struggle. That's the fun bit.

It’s a strange myth that atheists have nothing to live for. It’s the opposite. We have nothing to die for. We have everything to live for.

If I had a gun with two bullets and I was in a room with Hitler, Bin Laden, and Toby, I would shoot Toby twice.

If you can't joke about the most horrendous things in the world, what's the point of jokes? What's the point in having humor? Humor is to get us over terrible things.

Do unto others…’ is a good rule of thumb. I live by that. Forgiveness is probably the greatest virtue there is. But that’s exactly what it is - a virtue. Not just a Christian virtue. No one owns being good. I’m good. I just don’t believe I’ll be rewarded for it in heaven. My reward is here and now. It’s knowing that I try to do the right thing. That I lived a good life. And that’s where spirituality really lost its way. When it became a stick to beat people with. ‘Do this or you’ll burn in hell.’ You won’t burn in hell. But be nice anyway.

I see Atheists are fighting and killing each other again, over who doesn't believe in any God the most. Oh, no..wait.. that never happens.

Your critics want you to be as unhappy, unfulfilled and unimportant as they are. Let your happiness eat them up from inside.

The existence of God is not subjective. He either exists or he doesn’t. It’s not a matter of opinion. You can have your own opinions. But you can’t have your own facts.

Never confuse your right to say what you believe with a right to never be disagreed with and ridiculed for saying what you believe.

Happy Birthday Karl Urban!

I was a fan of the 'Dredd' comics when I was a teenager.

Now I'm this far up the ladder and I've got so much farther to go with what I want to achieve with it.

I don't see a benefit in accepting every single little morsel of work that comes along because I think, in essence, what you're doing is you're raping yourself really.

My philosophy is whatever you do, you've got to invest in yourself. If you don't, there are a lot of people out there who will get the job because they're more prepared than you.

It's such a small industry here you inevitably end up working with the same people over and over again. There are only so many actors to go around, which is good for us.

I'm high energy. Karl Urban Energy, High I did a little theatre work after that and the following year I got another part in a television series. Then it was almost to the end of the year before I got more work. That was coming to terms with the reality of the vocation I had chosen.

There's only so much you can do until you get on set and see the aesthetics of what you're dealing with. Then you see what the other players are giving to you. It's all about the transfer of energy between different actors.

I don't believe I could work as effectively at what I do without the support of my wife.

I did a little theater work after that and the following year I got another part in a television series. Then it was almost to the end of the year before I got more work. That was coming to terms with the reality of the vocation I had chosen.

When you work so hard on making a film, it's all worthwhile when you get to experience seeing that film with an audience who thoroughly enjoy it and react to the movie.

It's not off the agenda. Clearly everyone has woken up to the fact that an audience has found this movie and loves it. It's entirely possible, and if people want to see another installment then they should be vocal about that, because it can happen. The power of fandom can resurrect projects. In fact, that's what happened with "Star Trek". They weren't going to do a third season until fans did a letter-writing campaign and they continued that series.

It was always something I knew I was capable of and from an early age my mother was involved in the film industry. She used to work at a production company. So I was exposed to a renaissance period of films in New Zealand back in the early 80's.

That is a big danger, losing your inspiration. When I work in film and television I try to do each take a little differently. I never want to do the same thing twice, because then you're not being spontaneous, you're just recreating something.

If I read a script and find it engaging and I start making choices in my mind on how to approach the work, than that's a good indication that it is something worth pursuing.

Peter's really open to the humor in the day-to-day. One time, we were referencing a line in the book, "We counted all the slain and despoiled them, then we piled the carcasses and burned them." Of course, we went on all sorts of disgusting tangents about what else these Rohan soldiers did to the poor Orcs.

Nothing beats a great smile.

That's always an interesting concept when you try to make your dream into a reality and you come up against the facts of exactly what it is you're attempting to do.

"Dredd" represented a failure in marketing. I saw the tracking of that film weeks before it came out and the fundamental problem was no one knew it was being released. Once it came out on DVD and it sold 750,000 copies in the first week alone in North America alone, it was very clear that the audience had discovered it.

That is a big danger, losing your inspiration. When I work in film and television I try to do each take a little differently. I never want to do the same thing twice, because then you're not being spontaneous, you're just recreating something.

I like the timeframe involved in being an actor.

When I work, I try to eat as much vegetarian as possible. When I do Cupid, I eat vegetarian because I need the energy. I've got those wings on my back.

I love fishing and surfing, and I work out every day.

I never envisioned when I was reading that comic as a 17-year-old that I would have the opportunity to actually play the character.

I'll need every ounce that I have to drive it through. Film and TV require that energy. Sometimes fight scenes can be pretty intense. When I was shooting 'Heaven' it was truly guerrilla film-making.

Happy Birthday Zachary Quinto!

I'm also really fulfilled by having a production company and producing movies, and learning about how that works and happens. It's a totally, entirely separate skill set and it's one that I happen to also enjoy. So, I intend to cultivate all of those things until I can't anymore. That's my goal. I love to be challenged and busy, and so far, so good. I'm just going to do whatever I can to continue to encourage that.

I came up during the 'Star Wars' generation and that was sort of the thing I plugged into much more. It was a little before my time and I think it was sort of grappling with these intellectual ideas that were a little advanced for my young mind. At the time. But now I have a much deeper appreciation for it.

I found myself in a pattern of being attracted to people who were somehow unavailable, and what I realized was that I was protecting myself because I equated the idea of connection and love with trauma and death. I had to do a lot of work on the couch to really get to a place where I was able to show up to a relationship with someone who was actually capable of being in one - and that took a lot of trial and error. And I'm still working on all that stuff - that will never stop. But I definitely want kids... I want to share.

'Heroes' really changed the game for me in a way that nothing before it had.

My passion is acting, and has always been. It's what brought me to this point of being able to diversify and do other things, and I hope it's something I'll continue to have a passion for.

Parents need to teach their children principles of respect and acceptance.

I have a dualistic self. There are two sides of my personality: one is outgoing and gregarious; the other is introspective and thoughtful. I am an intellectually minded person and also very compassionate, which are qualities Spock possesses as well.

We are at the precipice of great transformation within our culture and government.

I listen to music a lot, if I need to get into a particular space. I do stretching and breathing, and take time to mostly be quiet and find the stillness. I think that's important.

Gay kids need to stop killing themselves because they are made to feel worthless by cruel and relentless bullying.

I don't immerse myself in the Internet chatter because it opens you up to a whole source of danger.

I recognized that I had a window of opportunity that had opened because of my exposure as an actor.

Our society needs to recognize the unstoppable momentum toward unequivocal civil equality for every gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered citizen of this country.

Other actors are not my concern, and that's their life and that's their journey. Everybody has to get to a point in their own time and their own way.

It is my intention to live an authentic life of compassion and integrity and action.

Every time I get on an airplane I have a routine. I cover the inside of my nostrils with anti-bacterial ointment. I'm popping Zicam like it's candy. And I drink, literally, from L.A. to New York, six bottles of water.

My desire to be valued is manifested in cultivating relationships with my friends and family.

I think it's like, you know, you can't get ahead of yourself, because no amount of success or exposure or opportunity is going to really matter or be ultimately fulfilling unless you can be totally present in what you're doing right now.

We are witnessing an enormous shift of collective consciousness throughout the world. We are at the precipice of great transformation within our culture and government.

The interesting thing about my character Sylar is that my strengths as an actor seemed to go completely against the shape of a character in the shadow.

I don't really approach a character as to whether or not it's good or bad. I just approach a character as to where it lives in me.

I find that communication as an actor and person is an important part of who I am. And I'm really drawn into the psychology of those dynamics.

It became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality.

I love when you aren't accountable to anybody or anything, and you can just be wherever you are.

What scares me? Oh, now that's a big question. I don't know what scares me - cockroaches, nuclear apocalypse. Fear is an interesting thing. It has a place in all of our lives. I try to be as fearless as possible. I don't always succeed, but I like to think I try.

I just find that there's something about looking back on interviews, whether for purposes of remembering what I said about something or if it's for posterity when I'm 75.

I would love to be a voice in this maelstrom of chaos and obsessive celebrity infatuation that says, 'Let's talk about something that matters'.

I love when you aren't accountable to anybody or anything, and you can just be wherever you are.

I try to be as fearless as possible. I don't always succeed, but I like to think I try.

The interesting thing about my character Sylar is that my strengths as an actor seemed to go completely against the shape of a character in the shadows. I stepped into this character and then realized how much there was to play with.

I believe in the power of intention to change the landscape of our society - and it is my intention to live an authentic life of compassion and integrity and action. Jamey Rodemeyer's life changed mine.

When I found out that Jamey Rodemeyer killed himself - I felt deeply troubled. But when I found out that Jamey Rodemeyer had made an "It Gets Better" video only months before taking his own life - I felt indescribable despair. I also made an it gets better video last year - in the wake of the senseless and tragic gay teen suicides that were sweeping the nation at the time. but in light of Jamey's death - it became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it - is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality. Our society needs to recognize the unstoppable momentum toward unequivocal civil equality for every gay lesbian bisexual and transgendered citizen of this country. Gay kids need to stop killing themselves because they are made to feel worthless by cruel and relentless bullying. Parents need to teach their children principles of respect and acceptance. We are witnessing an enormous shift of collective consciousness throughout the world. We are at the precipice of great transformation within our culture and government. I believe in the power of intention to change the landscape of our society - and it is my intention to live an authentic life of compassion and integrity and action. Jamey Rodemeyer's life changed mine. and while his death only makes me wish that I had done this sooner - I am eternally grateful to him for being the catalyst for change within me. Now I can only hope to serve as the same catalyst for even one other person in this world. that - I believe - is all that we can ask of ourselves and of each other.

I'm a big believer in the notion that our greatest potential lies in our darkest parts. To a certain extent it's only in facing those parts of ourselves that we can truly grow, and I think that's true of all of the characters I've played, certainly in the past few years.

There’s a group that calls itself the Sarmy-or Sylar’s Army- and it’s dedicated to the support of my character, and they don’t like it when he’s disparaged. Their slogan is “Every villain needs a legion of evil supporters.” But what’s funny is they do great charity work. It’s never bad to have an army.

Again, as a gay man I look at that and say there's a hopelessness that surrounds it, but as a human being I look at it and say 'Why? Where's this disparity coming from, and why can't we as a culture and society dig deeper to examine that?' We're terrified of facing ourselves.

He was really, really bad-ass and confident and sexy and intelligent and sensitive and curious. For years after he died, people would go out of their way to let me know how much he meant to them. And every time I heard it I was always so grateful to him for living that life. Now that I'm older, I know it's because that's what matters - the things people can tell your child about you - and I realize my father gave something really special to me even though he wasn't here to give it to me in person.

Happy Birthday René Auberjonois!

To tired to deal... with this... when I wake up I'll be 76! Gonna climb the hump... early!

I would hardly call myself an artist in that sense; I doodle, I draw, I'm not a trained artist, I couldn't sit down and do an accurate portrait of anyone.

The best part is the part I'm working at the moment.

I would not recommend anybody holding their breath, ... Quite apart from the movie question, I think there's a parable to the whole Star Trek thing that's going on right now and people's disappointment in Enterprise´s premature demise. When you have a field, and you plant the same thing in the field year after year after year, there's a certain point where the crop just begins to weaken. You have to let a field go fallow for a while. And I think that's what we're seeing right now ... It's not the end of Star Trek, but I think there will be a period now in which it lies fallow. And then hopefully, because of people like you who keep the dream alive, it will come back. And hopefully it will be strong and vital.

And so I've always been fascinated by the technical end of theater, and a lot of my closest friends are not actors, but in the other end of the business.

The best part is the part I'm working at the moment.

The truth is the worlds of Star Trek that we inhabited were so far apart.

I'm never going to retire. I'll die with my boots on.

My daughter is here in town doing a play, and her dog is staying with us. We live up in the hills, so he has access to thousands of acres of wilderness.

My wife, Judith, is the best person in the world.

For me, as I began to see the light at the end of the tunnel, I became aware of how on an instinctive level I made choices to cover myself.

I do the conventions now for two reasons. To raise money for Doctors Without Borders and travel.

I don't really think of Odo as a heroic lead, but that's nice if you do.

I love the fact that it's not only about Star Trek, but about science fiction in general, and science.

I worked with my son when he was much younger; we did L.A. Law together, where I played his father and he played a kid who was suing his father for alienation of affection or something. It was great.

How many times can you put together 26 different stories without running out?

I came out of repertory theater, where I worked 50 weeks a year, and I loved working with the people.

The best scene is the last great scene I did.

And my father, being a good Swiss puritan, always really insisted that if I was going to be an actor, I shouldn't just be an actor, I should know about the whole process.

At this point we've answered about every question you could possibly imagine about Deep Space Nine, so we do this thing called Theatrical Jazz, where we do a show of bits and pieces of things from plays and literature, poetry... stuff that we like. It's fun.

I did a voice for Odo, but people don't recognize you by your voice.

I just wait for something to present itself, and then I consider it.

I really do the conventions now for two reasons.

I'm never going to retire.

If you do your job properly you usually learn a lot from any role you do.

It always takes awhile to find out who the characters are.

The mask of the character was already written into the show, but I actually lobbied for a denser and more complete mask than they initially considered.

They've got to deliver twenty-six episodes a season and they're not going to beat their heads up against a wall if they feel something didn't, like, pan out the way they had hoped.
